Worldwide electric bicycles laws

 

United Kingdom

·  200W continuous power

·  Have pedals

·  15mph maximum assisted speed25km/h

·  maximum weight 40kgs (60kgs for tricycles and tandems)

·  more than 14 years old

 

Israel

The Israel authorities has passed legislation, as of December 2009, that allows electric bicycles to be legal for street use in the country and therefore subject to the same law as regular bicycles, under the following criteria:

·         Pedelec Drive - the motor is activated by the rider's pedaling effort and it has to cut out completely when the rider stops pedaling

·         Electric motor power - less then 250W

·         Maximum speed - 25 kilometers per hour. Also, the electric motor power decreses with the advance of the bicycle speed until it completely stops when the bicycles reaches the maximum speed

·         Riders must be at least 14 years of age

·         Riders must wear an helmet

·         Has to fully comply with the European standard - BSEN 15194

 


Europe

Electrically-assisted cycles are defined by the following criteria:

·         Pedelec Drive - the motor is activated by the rider's pedaling effort and it has to cut out completely when the rider stops pedaling

·         Electric motor power - less then 250W

·         Maximum speed - 25 kilometers per hour. Also, the electric motor power decreses with the advance of the bicycle speed until it completely stops when the bicycles reaches the maximum speed

Has to fully comply with the European standard - EN 15194

Canada

The Canada authorities has passed legislation for electric bicycle in 2001. The bicycle can be pedelecs or accelerator control e-bikes.This is what is define as electric bicycle and the safety requirements:

·         Two or three wheels

·         Has steering handlebars and is equipped with pedals

·         One or more electric motor with power of less then 500W

·         Capable of being propelled by muscular power

·         Pedelec - When engaged by muscular power it must cease assistance when muscular power ceases

·         Acclerator control e-bikes - power must ceases when braking

·         Incapable of providing assistance above 20 miles per hour (32 km/h)

·         Has a permanently label stating the vehicle is a power-assisted bicycle



United States

The Consumer Product Safety Commision requierments regarding electric bicycles are:

·         Have pedals

·         Electric motor power - less then 500W

·         Maximum speed - 20 miles per hour (32 km/h)

An electric bicycle which not brake those rules is considered as rgular bicycles and all that entails from it.

Each state has the possilibty to add more requiremnets and some of them did add some.

If there is no law in your state, then the above rules should be considered.


Australia

All motorised scooters and motorised pedal cycles require an Import Approval.

• Power output exceeding 200watts

• Not exceeding 50ml capacity

• Not capable of exceeding 50km/h
